Property from a Private Collection, PennsylvaniaFine Queen Anne Carved and Figured Walnut Rounded-Stile Compass-Seat Side Chairpossibly by the Henry Clifton (c. 1725-1771) and Thomas Carteret shopPhiladelphiacirca 1750 chair marked XIII and original slip seat frame marked IIIVHeight 42 3/8 in.Condition reporttwo later triangular corner glue block to back of chair seat and side rails. Four inches of the proper right back side of crest rail and four inches of upper portion of the back of proper right stile is patched. This is likely an expert repair for when the chair fell backwards and the crest and stile were damaged. A thin crack 3 1/2 in crack along front face of proper right read leg is filed with a piece of wood (like inlay). proper right side knee return possible an early replacement. front applied seat lip probably replaced. all knee returns re-secured with wire finish nails. refinished. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale. The
