Beschreibung:

Includes ten ambrotypes and five daguerreotypes of various sizes, most in full cases (a few of which are split into two halves). All are identified, most with old handwritten slips which are tipped or taped to the velvet liners facing the images. Also includes a lock of hair from one of the subjects. Compelling pictorial record of a New England family in the middle of the 19th century. According to a handwritten genealogical record offered in another part of this archive, one John Hill first settled in Dover, New Hampshire, before 1680. Judging from the captions of the images, and other indications, the images in this collection were retained by the descendants of Frank Hill, born in 1847, who is in two of the images. Ambrotype: Great Aunt Susan Galladay 1848. Sixth plate (8x7 cm; 3¼x2¾”). Octagonal gutta percha case. (Black varnish on back of image is partially flaked off.) Braided hair of Martha Galladay Seville, set in small box with label “Martha Galladay Seville’s hair at the time of her marriage to James Seville 1848.” Ambrotype: “Ellen (Hill) Walker, Sister of Frank Hill” (from handwritten label affixed to velvet liner of leather case). Name of photographer R.B. Perkins, Cuttings Pass (?) July 48 (?) stamped on metal overmat. Ninth plate (6x5 cm; 2½x2”). Embossed leather-covered case, metal clasp. Ambrotype: David Galladay. Undated.
