British Camp at Trudruffrin from the 18th to the 21st of September 1777, with the Attack made by Major General Grey against the Rebels near White Horse Tavern on the 20th of September. Drawn by an Officer on the Spot.
London: Faden, 1 July 1778. Engraved map (275 x 425 mm). Disposition of forces hand colored. Eight lettered references. Condition : wide margins, toned overall, staining in the margins. Provenance : Martin P. Snyder. contemporary plan of the “paoli massacre.” Fought on 21 September 1777, Washington, upon retreating from the Battle of Brandywine, left a force commanded by “Mad” Anthony Wayne to harrass the British as they marched to occupy Philadelphia. The British, however, led a midnight attack on the Americans, depicted in this battle plan. “Detailed plan of the encampment of the British and Hessian troops identified by unit, and Wayne’s American force in ambush. The line of march of the British under Grey and Musgrave during their night attack and bayonet charge (familiarly known as the ‘Paoli Massacre’) are indicated, as is the direction of the Americans’ retreat westward” (Nebenzahl, Bibliography of Printed Plans of the American Revolution).
