Beschreibung:

Seirocrinus subangularis Lower Jurassic Posidonienschiefer Formation, Holzmaden, Germany The crinoid, also known as the sea lily or feather star, is distantly related to the starfish, brittle star, and sea urchin. The crinoid is one of the world's living fossils. The most desirable fossil specimens are those from the Posidonia Shale and oil slate beds of Holzmaden in Southern Germany. The present specimen is a gorgeous example of the most sought after variety. The strong dark color of the matrix serves as an elegant background for the delicate winding neck and flower of this fossil, which is highlighted by the subtle shimmer of pyritization. The matrix itself is a work of art, prepared and polished into relief contours that accentuate the three-dimensional detail of the fossil. Adding further visual interest to this piece, the crinoid remains anchored to a piece of fossil driftwood. Some crinoid species, such as this example, drifted through the seas in colonies attached to floating debris rather than rooting to the ocean floor. Two smaller members of this colony are also featured in this stunning fossil display. Both an outstanding museum-quality specimen and an exquisite work of art, it has been beautifully prepared on irregularly-shaped matrix. The uncommonly large sea lily measures over five feet along its gently curving stem. Matrix measures 62 x 38in, Specimen length 67in
