Execution of a highway robber.- Phillipps (Samuel March, legal writer and civil servant, permanent under secretary for home-affairs, 1780-1862) Letter signed by Phillipps on behalf of Robert Peel Home Secretary to Under Sheriff Richardson at the Old Bailey, 1p., sm. 4to, Whitehall, 20th January 1829, "Mr Secretary Peel having had under Consideration, the Petition which you forwarded of James Wheeler a Convict under Sentence of Death in the Gaol of Newgate; I am directed to acquaint you that Mr. Peel regrets that he does not perceive any Circumstance stated that would justify him consistently with his Public Duty, in advising His Majesty to Grant the Prisoner any extension of the Royal Mercy", in an album of letters & cut signatures, together 46 letters and 93 cut signatures, all but 1 laid down or tipped-in, in a half calf album, rubbed, v.s., v.d.
