Exceedingly Rare Ten Cents John W. Norris Chicago. EP-124, HB-187, SC-139 Very Fine. Rated as Rarity-8+ (about 5 known) according to Fred Reed. This is an important "Key" major merchant type, especially to complete a 34 piece Encased Postage Stamp merchant set. The 10¢ is considered one of only two denominations which are even considered to be "collectable." As such, this piece is certainly extremely important. The case is remarkably clean, smooth and sharp, being a natural medium chestnut in color with Extremely Fine details. The mica is mostly missing, 90% being broken away with about 10% held by the outer frame. The green George Washington stamp is deep green with some light soiling from exposure. It is an important Encased Postage Stamp rarity that is needed by virtually every collector. We have traced the following sales: EAHA, Inc., April 22, 2000, selling for $4,025 previously in the EAHA, Dr. Gratz Collection Auction, August 27, 2005, as , graded Extremely Fine, selling at $5,310. There was only one example of an EP-124 in the Stack's, John J. Ford, Jr. Auction, June 2004, graded Choice Extremely Fine, which sold for $4,600. VF.
