EVELYN, John (1620-1706). Sylva, Or a discourse of Forest-Trees, and the Propagation of Timber in His Majesties Dominions. By J.E. London: John Martyn and James Allestry, 1664. 3 parts in one, 2 o (294 x 185 mm). Title printed in red and black with engraved arms of the Royal Society; 2 woodcuts in text. (Repairs to blank fore-margins of first 3 leaves.) Contemporary blind-ruled calf (some restoration to spine and corners). Provenance : Early drawing of a demon[?] with Greek captions on blank verso of animadversio leaf in second part; purchase note on imprimatur leaf, "Lamancha[?] 3 March 1853"; Robert Norton Ganz (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the first official production of the Royal Society. Evelyn wrote in protest against the widespread destruction of forests for the fuelling of furnaces used in the production of iron and glass. The work was well-received and resulted in an increase in reforestation. Sylva was long a standard authority. Part 3, the Kalendarium hortense , was reprinted separately many times, and was Evelyn's most popular work.
