Photograph album, c.1870-80, containing 313 albumen print photographs mounted rectos and versos to 68 thick card leaves, including landscapes, city views, architectural studies and ethnographic 'types' in Gibraltar, Andalusia, Madeira, Switzerland, Austria, northern Italy, France, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany (and a number of photographs of paintings or statuary), various dimensions (approx. 8 x 5.5 cm to 28.5 x 21 cm, i.e. fulll-page), contemporary manuscript captions in French throughout in black ink, blue moiré silk endpapers, contemporary grosgrain dark purple morocco binding by August Klein of Vienna (his stamp gilt to front turn-in), thick bevelled boards, front board with inlaid floral design comprising hand-painted porcelain segments, decoratively engraved brass cornerpieces to two corners, morocco expertly refurbished in places, 4to (28.9 x 22 cm) (Qty: 1) Among the photographs of Andalusia are ethnographic studies of North Africans, captioned 'Femme maure', 'Soldat maure' and 'Jeune fille juive, Mogador'; there is also a veiled woman described as 'Femme de Tarifa'. There are also many images of engineering interest, including the mountain railway at Righi and salt mines at Berchtesgaden. The Scottish views (showing sights in Edinburgh and elsewhere) are signed in the negative by George Washington Wilson; the English views include Lake Windermere and Oxford and Cambridge colleges (Magdalen, Christ Church, Trinity Cambridge, and Clare).
