Eugène Cornu (French, 1827-1899), a bronze and marble mounted model of the Warwick Vase, cast after the Antique, circa 1870, the everted rim above profile masks cast in high relief to front and back, with twin entwined handles, above a waisted and fluted stem inscribed EUGE. CORNU PARIS to the lower rim, atop a circular marmo rouge griotte socle bearing an applied metal plaque, inscribed CERCLE DES PATINEURS, PRIX de SOUSCRIPTION HANDICAP, 26 Mai 18--, the urn with removable metal liner, 38cm high overall, 56cm wide The sculptor Eugène Cornu, installed in Paris at 29 rue Popincourt, after having worked as a designer and then director for the renowned company Tahan, worked closely with the Compagnie des Marbres Onyx d’Algérie, led by Gustave Viot, successor of Alphonse Pallu, at 24 Boulevard des Italiens. They produced luxurious furniture and art objects, incorporating onyx marble and bronze, with sometimes enamel, a combination then considered as a novelty which quickly became highly prized among wealthy collectors. They both showed at the 1867 Universal Exhibition held in Paris winning the Gold Medal
