ESTATE PLAN - [Gier, William (fl.1610-30)]. [Estate plan of the] landes of William Hunt of Dalehill in the parrish of Tisehurst in the Countie of Sussex . [Sussex: ca. 1630]. Manuscript estate plan, on vellum, ink and wash, 600 x 780mm. A detailed survey of the parish of Ticehurst in East Sussex, principal roads and tracks in blue-grey, houses with red roofs, barns with brown, fields neatly drawn and bordered in green, woods, orchards and coppices denoted by tree symbols, large central compass rose with elaborate compass points heightened in gold, one area of woodland decorated with an unusual bird-like animal, presumably a local legend, scale bar at upper right corner with scale in perches, two inset tables at upper right corner listing the lands and acreages belonging to William Hunt the whole plan set within broad borders of stylised stems and flowers. (Waterstain to right side of plan, a few small old stretcher holes to borders, one small tear). An interesting early 17th century estate plan of Ticehurst in the eastern 'wealden' district of Sussex between Hawkhurst and Lamberhurst. William Gier to whom this plan is attributed is known through three estate plans of Sussex, and presumably operated as a local surveyor for the up and coming gentry who were acquiring lands and estates in the wealden parts of Sussex and Kent. This plan may well have been adapted during its composition for the use of William Hunt Ownership names of various fields have been carefullly erased, and given a further wash cover. Early 16th century estate plans are rare on the open market, and this particular example is in good condition. Eden p.112.
