Ernst Udet (1896-1941)good group of 32 military aircraft designs, studies of fighter planes and bombers of various nationalities, from 1917 to 1941, including the British Westland Lysander, Camel F.1, Bristol and others, the French Reggiana 2001, Martin and others, the American Boeing P.26A, and the Spad XIII der Amerikanischen Expeditions Korp, 1918, German Messerschmitts, Heinkels, Fokkers, and Junkers, including the 87 Bomber der Spanischen Luftwaffe, 1937, and others, 32 watercolours, with pen and ink, over pencil, all on the same coarse-textured paper, all signed over an iron cross motif, all identified in captions below, some further annotated above, bearing various dates, probably of original encounters, up to 1941, each c.37 x 50cm. (14 1/2 x 19 3/4 in), unframed (32). *** Ernst Udet (1896-1941) was a WW1 flying ace, second only to Manfred von Richthofen in his success rate, of those who survived the conflict. He went on to be a stunt pilot, flying at airshows and in films, in Germany and in Holllywood, living a playboy life. He found backing to start producing his own aircraft, but with limited success. However, he was invited by Göring, whom he had met in the First War, to assist with design and development to rebuild the Luftwaffe. This included buying foreign planes, such as the American Curtiss Hawk, for research. From this, Udet developed the concept of the dive-bomber. Udet was not politically motivated, and once hostilities broke out and he was in charge of production, the pressures, with limited resources were immense. This intensified the acrimony between Udet and Göring, who had never liked each other, and put great mental strain on Udet. When he was blamed by Göring for losing the Battle of Britain, it became too much and he committed suicide, a fact that was concealed from the public, who were told he died a hero. group of drawings were obviously executed at the same time as each other, the various dates seeming to relate to their original production, or perhaps Udet’s own direct experience of them. Almost all are in German markings, whatever their original nationality, and many are annotated umgebaut und von de kaiserlichen Deutschen Luftstreitkräfte geflogen. But it is not clear if those from the First War were converted and actually saw service again, or were simply used for evaluation. Udet’s passion for the plane over national politics is reflected in the note inscribed on the American Boeing P.26A, Deutschland muss solcheinen sturzkampfbomber besitzein! (Germany must have such dive fighters!). was known as an accomplished artist as well as a designer, and it is possible to speculate this group of drawings was undertaken at a time of personal reflection on what had mattered to him most towards the end of his ultimately troubled life (1941 is the latest date to appear).
