Ernest Lawson American, 1873-1939 Sun Drenched Coast, Southern France, circa 1893 Signed E. Lawson (ll) Oil on canvas 14 x 19 inches Provenance: Property of a Florida Collector Ernest Lawson was first exposed to an impressionistic approach to painting through studies with John Twachtman at the Art Students League and at the school of art that Twachtman had opened in association with J. Alden Weir in Cos Cob, Connecticut. In 1893, Lawson made his first trip to France, where he enrolled at the Academie Julien. He spent the summer of 1893 in Martigues, a fishing village in the south of France, where he employed a brilliant impressionistic palette to record the rugged coastline. Returning to Paris, two of his southern subjects were accepted at the Salon des Artistes Francaises. The present work, executed with the more controlled brushstroke and vivid hues that characterize Lawson's work from this period, may date from this episode. The brilliant light, intense shadows and terrain are evocative of this picturesque region of the French Riviera. In 1894, following his marriage to Etta Holman, Lawson returned with her to France. He wrote of his French sojourn to a family member, "I want to keep my individuality and at the same time get as much of the best French influence as will be consistent with it. As with medicine French influence kills if taken in too large a dose - witness most of our best artists who have become to all intents and purposes Frenchmen in work and thought." [Ernest Lawson, undated letter as quoted in Barbara O'Neal, Ernest Lawson 1873-1939. Ottawa: National Gallery of Canada, 1967, p. 8.
Wax relined, trimmed to edges. 1/4'' repair at upper edge, 2 1/2'' from left side. 1/4'' repair at lower left, immediately to the right of signature. Minor inpaint at upper edge, center. Minor surface grime, would benefit from a light clean.
