ENGLISH LITERATURE -- 19th CENTURY. A collection of autograph letters signed by writers, including: Sir Walter SCOTT (1771-1832). Autograph letter signed ('Walter Scott') to Allan Cunningham (stonemason and author, secretary to Sir Francis Chantrey), Abbotsford, 15 June 1828, returning a testimonial (not present) he has signed on behalf of Cunningham's son, sending 'respects to Mr Chantrey who I suppose is overwhelmed with business as usual to the increase of his own fame and the great credit of the country', and expressing the wish that Chantrey should sculpt a bust of a friend, a Scottish worthy ('the head is a fine thoughtful dignified one'), one page, 4to, with integral address leaf (seal tears, weak at folds of address panel, two repairs); Isaac D'ISRAELI (father of Benjamin Disraeli, 1766-1848). Autograph letter (3rd person) to W. Watts, Bradenham, 12 September 1833, referring to 'a letter from his servant Tita [Battista Falcieri, Byron's gondolier, in whose arms the poet died; afterwards taken on as a manservant by Benjamin Disraeli] ... the character of this person has been elaborately drawn by Mr Rogers in his poem on "Italy"', one page, 4to , tipped onto album leaf; CARLYLE, Thomas (1795-1881). Autograph sentiment signed, Chelsea, April 1847, 'Simon Brodie had a cow; He lost his cow, and he could not find her,' four lines on one page, 4to ; together with letters by Sir Richard Francis BURTON (note signed in English and Arabic), Walter Bagehot (referring to the inadvisability of 'women trying to live alone') and Isabella Lucy Bishop (two).
