ELIZABETH I (1553-1603), Queen of England. Draft of a patent, in Latin, with a note at the top in English, n.d. One page, on vellum, oblong, 8 ¾ x 13 ½ inches, small hole at top not affecting text, slight adhesion on verso from previous mounting . The Court of Wards and Liveries was a court established during the reign of Henry VIII in England. Its purpose was to administer a system of feudal dues; but as well as the revenue collection, the court was also responsible for wardship and livery issues. A patent is to grant an annuity to Christopher Morgan, brother and heir of John Morgan The patent was presumably approved, as Elizabeth has signed at the top; but it has no date, though the dating can be limited to 1590-1603 due to the inclusion of a note at end: “Extur: p[er] Hare cl[er]ic[um] wardor[um].” This suggests that the draft was prepared by John Hare, admitted Clerk of the Wards early in 1590. He managed the department at one of the most important times in the Court history, when it was strained to increase its revenue. Christopher Morgan was holding lands in Wytherstone.
