EDWARDS, Sydenham Teast (c.1768-1819). The Botanical Register . London: James Ridgeway, 1815-1844. Volumes I-VIII, XIV-XIX, XXI-XXII, and XXIV-XXX (only, of 33), 8° (250-229 x 154-148mm). 1,871 hand-coloured engraved plates by Sansom, Smith, et al. after Edwards, John Lindley et al., 38 double-page, 130 folding, one double-page folding. 2 engraved plates. Woodcut illustrations in the text. Text leaves 527, 578, and 1144 cancelled. One-leaf publisher's advertisements bound after 1165, 1216, 1246, 1312, 1348, 1376, and 1391. Single leaf bound in before 1358 noting postponement of issue. Additional titles bound before 'Miscellaneous Notices' in vols XXVI-XXIX. (Variable light spotting, browning and offsetting, some folding plates slightly creased, light marginal dampstaining on a few quires, lacking vol. III errata and possibly one preliminary leaf in III and IV, vol. XVIII title and leaf 1777 detached, leaf 1521 with short tears.) All bound in non-uniform contemporary half roan or half calf gilt, except one in straight-grained morocco gilt and one in modern half morocco, spines gilt in compartments or with gilt leather letting-pieces, original printed wrappers bound in at the end of vol. XXX (some rubbing and scuffing, occasional chipping at extremities, splitting on a few joints, one board detached). Provenance : Charles Robert Colvile (1815-1886, bookplates in vols I and III-VIII) -- A.M. Grey de Ruthyn (inscriptions in vol. XVI-XVII, XXIV, and XXVII, amended booklabel in vol XXIX) -- RH (bookplate with Hanbury crest in vol. XXV) -- Mr Cunninghame (inscription in vol. XXX). Edwards was encouraged as a botanical artist by William Curtis and worked for twenty-seven years as an artist for Curtis' Botanical Magazine (cf. lot 11). In 1815, Edwards left the Botanical Magazine , to start his own periodical, The Botanical Register ; the text to volumes I-XIV was written by John Bellenden Ker and continued by John Lindley for the remaining volumes.
