The label's address helps date this work to after 1882 when the dealer moved from 101 to 258 Westminster Street. This recently rediscovered landscape is a large and impressive mid-career example of Edward M. Bannister's landscape painting of the Rhode Island countryside. The heightened tonal qualities, dramatic light and unusual composition all show the artist working confidently in his mature period. We would like to thank art historian Anne Louise Avery, who is currently working on the first catalogue raisonné of Edward Bannister's work, for her opinion and report on this painting.
