EDMUND DULAC (1882-1953): FRANCE LIBRE POSTES: MADAGASCAR Ink and pencil on paperboard, c.1942, unsigned. 10 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. (sheet), 12 x 9 1/4 in. (frame). Note: Edmund Dulac was a French-born magazine and book illustrator who moved to London c.1903 and became a naturalized British citizen. In 1937, he was commissioned to design the postage stamp issued to commemorate the coronation of King George VI. Dulac designed stamps and bank notes for Free France (France Libre) during World War II. From Colonial outposts in Africa, India and the Pacific, Free France steadily took over Vichy possessions, fighting against the Axis powers and Vichy Regime everywhere from the Middle East to North Africa.
