[Dutch] REMBRANDT, Harmensz. van Rijn The Adoration of the shepherds: a night scene. Ca. Etching, drypoint and burin, 14,8 x 19,8 cm, thin laid paper without watermark, unsigned (sm. professional repair at upper right, only visible on verso, trimmed outside platemark with thread margin, min. foxing, mostly on verso). Hinged to passe-partout by upper corners. A fine velvety impression in which the visual impact of the chiaroscuro-effect of this night scene has been well-preserved. Few etchings of Rembrandt are capable of showing the experimental nature of the Amsterdam artist as this one. Rembrandt reworked the plate on eight different occasions until he was satisfied with the result. According to the New Hollstein it is an impression of the 9th state (of 11), with the first posthumous reworkings of the plate. Ref. Hind - Hollstein 46.8 - New Hollstein 300.Prov. Albert Van Loock (stamp on verso, Lugt 3751).
