Beschreibung:

DUTCH EAST INDIA COMPANY SCHOOL. Manuscript chart of the Gulf of Siam and the South China Sea. Batavia?: late 17th century]. Manuscript chart, 1010 x 655mm, ink and wash on paper, coastlines in sepia ink coloured in yellow green and red, principal rivers and coastal names in sepia , islands lettered in red, sandbanks, wrecks, obstructions and mountainous coasts clearly marked, the inshore waters marked with numerous lines of depth soundings. The map decorated with a compass rose surmounted by a large fleur-de-lys, scale bar divided into Dutch miles, latitudinal graticule to right margin, the Dutch trading post near the De Stadt Cambodia marked by a town symbol, the chart divided by rhumb-lines in sepia, green and red. (Left and right margins trimmed with loss along old fold lines). A rare VOC chart of South East Asia showing the eastern coasts of Malaya, the north west part of Borneo and Sarawak, the gulf of Siam, Bangkok (Bankosy), Phnom-Penn (de Stadt Cambodia), the Mekong, and the coast of Vietnam north to Hanoi. Several Dutch trading posts are indicated "Hollandse Logie" particularly near Phnom-Penn and Bangkok. Most VOC charts for the regular trading route from Amsterdam to Batavia were drawn up in Amsterdam under the guidance of the chief cartographer. There were however a number of cartographers working in Batavia drawing charts of the immediate vicinity, particularly for trading routes to South East Asia, China and Japan. This chart was made for local use by trading captains of the VOC. All VOC charts are rare, particularly localised charts such as this.
