'These various Women's Examinations puzzle me!' Finding himself 'at sea' when being called upon to advise upon his niece Edith's chances of securing a place at Oxford, Dodgson seeks help from Elizabeth Wordsworth, the Principal of Lady Margaret Hall Dogson has heard that his niece has little chance, but has nevertheless been asked for his opinion. Dodgson's own idea is that 'going in for the Examination would be good practice, even if she failed to pass', but he is nevertheless 'timid of advising in a subject in which I feel myself so much 'at sea''.
