Document Signed (“Abraham Lincoln”), partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 pp, folio, on vellum, Washington, DC, March 10, 1863, appointing Robert Townsend as Commander in the U.S. Navy, with engraved vignettes and orange wafer seal, some creasing, document tacked down to mount, signature light. Robert Townsend entered the Navy as a midshipman in 1835 and served until 1851. At the onset of the Civil War he reenlisted, and was soon promoted to Commander, serving under Admiral David D. Porter. Townsend commanded the ironclad “Essex” at the siege of Port Hudson and during the Red River Campaign.
