Two half-titles, title (in vol.I). 325 FINELY ENGRAVED PLATES BY THE AUTHOR (numbered 1-167, one unnumbered, 168-324), each plant additionally identified in ink in a neat late-18th-century hand according to Linnaean binomials, a 10pp. manuscript cross-reference index (in the same hand) bound at the back of vol.II. (Slight spotting to the final plate in vol.I and the first plate in vol.II; about 6 plates with heavier brown spots in their margins, affecting the image area of one plate: no.45; plate 49 loosely inserted.) Late-18th-century speckled calf (worn). Provenance : Mary, Marchioness of Rockingham (manuscript note of bequest, dated 1804, to); Charles William 5th Earl Fitzwilliam (by descent to); William Charles de Meuron, 7th Earl Fitzwilliam (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 250 COPIES, OF THE MOST IMPORTANT 18TH-CENTURY WORK ON PLANTS IN A PRIVATE GARDEN TO BE PUBLISHED IN ENGLAND. "James Sherard (1666-1738), botanist and apothecary, had gardens at Eltham... famous for rare plants. Dillenius made the gardens memorable through excellent illustrations, drawn and engraved by himself. They were sufficiently accurate to be of considerable service to Linnaeus. The original edition... is a magnificent book... Dillenius was a native of Darmstadt who, coming to England in 1721, adopted Ray's system and became, on Dr William Sherard's benefaction (1728), professor at Oxford and one of the most important botanists of his time" (Hunt).
