DOUGLAS, CARSTAIRS. (2). Chinese-English dictionary of the vernacular or spoken language of Amoy, with the principal variations of the Chang-chew and Chia-chew dialects. London (Trübner & Co) 1873. Small 4:o (about 254x175 mm.). (2), (7), viii-xix, (1), (1)-612 pp. Contemporary brown half leather, worn, gilt spine in five compartments. Some marginal dampstaining at end, some foxing. With the signature of Campbell N. Moody, Formosa, on first endpaper, and with numerous additions and comments in ink and pen in the margins and text and on endpapers, including Chinese characters. Löwendahl: China illustrata nova. Supplement, 1825. This is the first dictionary of the spoken language of Amoy. The basis of the dictionary is a manuscript vocabulary prepared by J. Lloyd, missionary of the Amnerican Presbyterian Church. + BARCLAY, THOMAS. Supplement to Dictionary of the vernacular or spoken language of Amoy... Shanghai (printed by the Commercial Press Lmited) 1923 4:o (about 265x183 mm.). (4), (i)-iv, (2, last blank), (1)-271, (1 blank), (4) pp. Contemporary brown leather. somewhat worn, somewhat gilt spine with title in gilt, all edges gilt. Interfoliated. Dedication to "The rev. Campbell N. Moody. Shoka, Formosa, from the Author, April 1923. A slight Acknowledgment of a great Indebtness" on first endpaper. 2 volumes. Löwendahl as above. From the preface: "My colleague, the Rev. Campbell N. Moody of Shoka, Formosa, during his stay in the Island made a careful study of the original dictionary, going over it several times, with the assistance of Formosan scholars and others. When he heard of my undertaking the work, he copied out the notes he had made (apparently from the above copy), occupying more than four hundred large pages of manuscript, and forwarded them all to me to be made free use of in my work". From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
