DICKENS, CHARLES. A Christmas Carol. London: Chapman & Hall, 1843. Hand-colored etched frontispiece and 3 hand-colored plates by John Leech 4 text wood engravings by W.J. Linton after Leech. Small 8vo, original brown-salmon vertically ribbed cloth, decorated in gilt and blind, g.e., green endpapers, lower joint torn and chipped at the top third of the spine, spine a little worn at ends with some browning; a few scattered stains; quarter morocco folding case. FIRST EDITION, with the following points: title-page printed in red and blue, "Stave I" as the first chapter heading, green endpapers; text uncorrected, imperfect signature letter "C" at foot of p. 17; the closest interval between blind-stamping at left margin and left extremity of gilt wreath on front cover is 14-15mm. and the "D" in "Dickens" within wreath is perfect (corresponding to Todd's first impression, first issue); 2 pages of integral advertisements at end. This copy WITH MOUNTED CLIPPED SIGNATURE on front pastedown which reads: "always my Dear Sir Very faithfully yours Charles Dickens " Smith, vol. 2, no. 4; Eckel, p. 110; Sadleir 684 -- [Slipcased with:] DICKENS. A Christmas Carol. Philadelphia: Carey & Hart, 1844. 4 hand-colored engraved plates and woodcuts by J. Leech. 8vo, original yellow-beige cloth, decoratively gilt, minor wear to extremities; endpapers discolored, a few fore-margins slightly chipped. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, IN RARE "HOLIDAY" BINDING, "only two other copies are known" in this binding according to catalogue slip of Merle Johnson laid in. Bookplates of S. Alofsen and Frank J. Hogan.
