DICKENS, Charles (1812-70). The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club . London: Chapman and Hall, [April 1836-November 1837] [all wrappers dated 1836]. 20 original parts as issued in 19 monthly volumes, 8° (225 x 140mm). 43 etched plates by Robert Seymour (7), Robert William Buss (2) and Hablot Knight Browne ('Nemo' and 'Phiz', 37). (Plates in part I detached and frayed at lower margin, in part XVII the advertisement for the Life of Walter Scott lacks pp. 13-14, a few other advertisements not present, final part with a few corners creased.) Uncut in original green printed wrappers, front covers with wood-engraved pictorial border by J. Jackson after Seymour, part XVII unopened (front cover of part I partially detached, frayed at bottom edge and with small red brush stains, small stain on upper cover of part III, part X with worn spine); green morocco pull-off case. Provenance : Harry F. Marks, New York (bookseller's label within case). A GENERALLY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS. With the name of Seymour as illustrator on the front covers to parts I and II. Part I with plates in later states; final leaf, E1, bears both signature and pagination, denoting third issue of this part. The two plates in part VI with correct plate numbers. P.10 in 'The Pickwick Advertiser' in part X reset with the 'The Poetic Wreath' advertisement at foot. CC2 in part 12 Hatton & Cleaver's variant A with a page-depth of 175mm. In the final part the frontispiece is first plate. The etched title is also first plate, the inn sign reading 'Tony Veller.' The advertisements differ from those called for by Hatton & Cleaver (pp. 33-88) in the following cases: part I. Without the advertisement leaves on smaller paper for Chapman and Hall's books; part III. The advertisement leaves on smaller paper for Chapman and Hall's books called for in this part are instead bound into part I; part IV. Without 'The Pickwick Advertiser' (4pp.).
