DIBBLE, Sheldon (1809-1845). History and General Views of the Sandwich Islands Mission. New York: Published by Taylor & Dodd, 1839. 12 o (192 x 115 mm). Original brown panel-stamped cloth (wear at extremities, soiling). FIRST EDITION. Chapter 1 contains an account of Cook's discovery of the islands and his death there. Dibble gathered his information by sending questionnaires to the oldest local inhabitants, but the result, not checked against other contemporary sources, is more folklore than actual history. Dibble, a devout and funtamentalist-minded Christain missionary, is highly critical of Cook and the divine honors accorded him. Cook's reputation in the United States suffered for many years as a result of Dibble's appraisal. Provenance: Lowell City School Library, their labels on front pastedown and on title verso. Sabin 19991; Mitchell Library Cook 2475; Holmes 88.
