Half-title, title in red and black with vignette, text in double column with woodcut opening initials and occasional tail-pieces (a few quires heavily browned, lighter browning elsewhere, quires 5A-5B with small hole at inner margin). Contemporary sheep, spine gilt, red edges (covers scuffed, corners worn, paper shelf label covering base of spine). Provenance : purchased from Slatkine, Geneva, 1926, for Frs. S. 12 -- ANDRE ENGEL COLLECTION. Second edition of d'Herbelot's encylopedic work on the Orient, first published in 1697. A digest of his extraordinarily wide reading in Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Aramaic, Syriac and Hebrew, it was completed after his death by Antoine Galland, the translator of the Arabian Nights. Scotin, 14 etched plates, folding engraved world map (map slightly torn near fold, some browning and spotting of text, A3 and V1 of vol. I with tear into bottom line of text, Q4 of the same vol. affected by small burn hole, vol. I waterstained towards end). Contemporary mottled Hispanic sheep, spines gilt, comb-marbled endpapers, marbled edges (covers scuffed, spine rubbed, vol. I with chip to spine and one or two small wormholes, inner hinges split). Provenance : purchased from Lonchamp, Lausanne, 1928 -- ANDRE ENGEL COLLECTION. FIRST EDITION of this Jesuit missionary's work, mainly devoted to Portuguese conquests in the East. The frontispiece shows a view of the Indian fleet at anchor in Lisbon, while the plates depict Portuguese possessions and portraits of her navigators and conquistadors. The voyages of Vasco de Gama, Cabral and Magellan are delineated on the world map. A duodecimo edition in 4 volumes was also published, 1733-34. No Portuguese edition appeared until 1786.
