Essex tired of being Elizabeth's favorite in court and left in 1589 to join the fleet of Norris and Drake on April 8, just as they were about to sail in support of Don Antonio, a claimant to the throne of Portugal. The Queen attempted to recall him but he had already sailed. After a long voyage Essex's ship joined the others and he tried to distinguish himself, being the first to wade through the surf to the Portuguese shore. In the attack on Lisbon he went to the gates and challenged any of the Spanish garrison in the name of his mistress. Elizabeth sent an angry letter demanding his return. Norris and Drake supported this and he left for the court and once again became the Queen's favorite.
