Bible, in Latin
Bernhard Richel, 1475
BIBLE, in Latin. [Basel: Bernhard Richel,] 1475
.
Richel Bible, with striking hand-colored woodcut Maiblumen and historiated initials. The printer, Bernhard Richel, was first mentioned in Basel documents in 1472, and his first dated book was printed in 1474; he collaborated with other Basel printers, including Berthold Ruppel, who had worked with Gutenberg in Mainz and is credited with bringing printing to Basel. His Bibles, printed both in partnership and alone, "began a dramatic reformatting of the Vulgate text as transmitted by thirteenth-century university manuscripts" (Saenger). Richel reintroduced elements like the Eusebian canons and their marginal concordance, psalms numbered with Roman numerals, and other graphic reference systems from as far back as the 9th century, lighting "a spark that kindled further and more radical visual experimentation" (Saenger). This copy may be signed by the rubricator, whose signature "Galliani" is on the retained early flyleaf. Goff B-540; HC 3053*; Bod-inc B-250; BMC III 736; BSB-Ink B-418; GW 4215. See Paul Henry Saenger and Kimberly Van Kampen, The Bible as Book: The First Printed Editions (1999).
Two parts in one, royal folio (397 x 295mm). 460 leaves. Printed in red and black. Red paragraph marks and yellow capital strokes. Woodcut initials with hand-coloring in various sizes (scattered minor stains and worming, browning affecting about 6 leaves, a few small repairs, one closed tear through text). Modern blindstamped calf preserving earlier hardware and flyleaves. Custom box with chemise. Provenance: marginalia in several hands from various periods, including the signature "Galliani" on the flyleaf which appears to be that of the rubricator.
