Description On introduction in August 1959 the Mini was marketed under the Austin and Morris names, as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor. The Austin Seven was renamed to Austin Mini in January 1962 and Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969. In 1980 it once again became the Austin Mini and in 1988 the Rover Mini. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the British market received numerous “special editions” of the Mini, which shifted the car from a mass-market item into a fashionable icon. It was this image that perhaps helped the Mini become such an asset for BMW, which later bought the remnants of BMC as the Rover Group. It was even more popular in Japan, which took the lion’s share of the circa 40,000 Minis produced annually in the early 1990s. Here we have something very special, a rare opportunity to own a Mini Cooper with a unique and outstanding pedigree having being ordered and owned by one of the original 1960’s style icons that helped to make the Mini the incredible and appreciating classic car that it is today. You will be hard pressed to see any article written about the ‘ultra cool’ Mini and London in the swinging sixty’s that doesn’t refer to the Mini that Peter Sellers, her then husband, bought Britt Ekland as a birthday gift. Britt, Mick Jagger, Twiggy and the Beatles all owned and used Sir Alec Issigonis brainchild and collectively made the car and the era such a huge success. Unfortunately the original mini bought for her by Peter Sellers was stolen, stripped and subsequently crushed so this vehicle could very well be the last remaining connection between that era and this style ambassador. The car itself is a lovely example in its own right having been ordered in 1991 by Britt Ekland from H.L. Austin & Sons Ltd in SW18 and still has the original V5 and Service record book with her name and address; Billing Street, Chelsea where she lived at the time, with the notification of sale transfer slip with her signature on it. She owned the Mini for 5 years and only sold it when she auctioned off everything she owned after her divorce from Slim Jim Phantom, the drummer from the Stray Cats in 1996. The car was purchased by the ‘well known’ and respected London Mini Centre, Lower Richmond Road, Putney who sold it to the 2nd owner who had it for 11 years before selling it to the last owner who has had it 8 years so it has had only 3 owners in total who have all loved and cherished it. The genuine mileage is only 48,000 miles with lots of service history; MoT’s and bills to back this up. The specification inside the car is also standard including half leather seats, Mini Cooper alloy steering wheel, 3 clock dash, original radio cassette player (and handbook) and red carpets. The only changes are aftermarket alloy door pulls and window winder handles but they could be put back to standard very easily and cheaply. It has an MoT until April 30th 2016 with no advisories.
