DEMOSTHENES and AESCHINES. Orationes , extracts and fragments: Demosthenis et Aeschinis mutuae accusationes de ementita legatione, & de Corona, ac contra Timarchum quinque numero . Venice: Hieronymus Scotus, 1545. 8 (159 x 104mm). Italic type. Printer's device on title, repeated on final verso, historiated and ornamental initials. (Small stains on title, very light dampstain.) Contemporary Venetian brown goatskin tooled in gilt and blind, by the 'Fugger Binder', gauffered edges (without 4 fore-edge ties, very slightly rubbed, sympathetically rebacked). Provenance : contemporary marginal annotations in a neat humanist hand; a few later scribbles. A HANDSOME VENETIAN BINDING BY THE 'FUGGER BINDER', so called for the large quantity of bindings executed by this shop for the avid collector Johann Jakob Fugger. The 'Fugger Binder' by no means worked exclusively for Fugger, however, undertaking extensive commissions for notable renaissance collectors such as Thomas Mahieu, Antoine Perrenot, Carndinal de Granvelle, and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. The present binding shares 3 tools with a plaquette binding illustrated by De Marinis (1707ter, cf. Hobson, Humanists and Bookbinders 77a/ Renaissance Book Collecting , appendix 8, 64). It is a new addition to Hobson's provisional census of bindings by the 'Fugger Binder' in Renaissance Book Collecting , Cambridge: 1999). On the 'Fugger Binder' see also M. Foot, Henry Davis Gift , I, 308-322 and I. Schunke 'Venezianische Renaissanceeinbnde', Studi di bibliografia e di storia in onore di Tammaro de Marinis , IV, 1964, 123-200. This collection brings together three exchanges of vitriolic orations by Demosthenes and his arch rival Aeschines. As examples of persuasive oratory, they are hard to surpass. Indeed, when Aeschines advocated a judgement against Demosthenes in his oration 'Against Ctesiphon', even he had to admit that Demosthenes' powerful counter oration, 'On the Crown' won the day, later telling an audience 'you would not wonder [that I failed] if you had heard Demosthenes'. Adams D-293
