Deineka boldly illustrated this agit-prop picture book with early Socialist Realist lithographs. The poem and pictures describe how Soviet youth get ready to celebrate May Day. Deineka studied at the Moscow VKhUTEMAS under Valentin Favorsky and I. Nivinskii and began exhibiting in 1924. He was a founding member of the Society of Easel Painters, October, and the Russian Association of Proletarian Artists, organizations that became increasingly critical of Futurism and the avant-garde in the Soviet Union. He produced many monumental paintings that became important examples of Socialist Realism in Russia. Barto was a famous Soviet children's poet, who was popular in the USSR and in other parts of the world.
