DEGAS, Edgar (1834-1917). Autograph letter signed to Albert Bartholomé ('mon cher Bartholomé'), Hôtel d'Angleterre, Cauterets, 30 August [1888], 3½ pages, 8vo (small ink blot). 'Mallarmé ... me poursuit pour sa danseuse'; Degas writes from the spa town of Cauterets (where he took the waters three times from 1888 to 1890) and apologises for writing yet again when tired - he has just written to Mme Howland, Mary Cassatt and to the poet Mallarmé, from whom he has received news 'de notre bonne et affectueuse Américaine, sa voisine près de Fontainebleau. Il faut... par le travail de sa plume, mériter de bonnes lettres comme les vôtres'. Degas continues on other matters, the 'Concert Classique', 'le vrai Théâtre, Polichinelle', his doctor, Evariste Michel's surprise at his rapid improvement, and Lourdes.
