DECKER, P. (fl.1759). Chinese Architecture, Civil and Ornamental. Being a large Collection of the most Elegant and Useful Designs of Plans and Elevations, &c. London: for the Author, sold by Henry Parker, Eliizabeth Bakewell, H.Piers and partner, 1759. 2 parts. [ Bound with :] Gothic Architecture Decorated. Consisting of a Large Collection of Temples, Banqueting, Summer and Green Houses... London: for the Author, sold by Henry Parker [etc.], 1759. 2 parts. 2 works in one volume, oblong 4° (235 x 292mm). 60 engraved plates (36 in the first and 24 in the second work). (First title with about a quarter torn away but neatly repaired, occasional old dampstaining and light marginal soiling.) Modern half calf incorporating the early marbled-paper boards. Provenance : Thomas Brown (inscription dated 1764). Rare at auction, often wrongly attributed to Paul Decker the Younger, the Nuremberg engraver, who died in 1742. "If such a person as 'P.Decker, Architect' existed [these] are his only recorded works." (E.Harris. British Architectural Books and Writers 1556-1785 p.178). Twenty-one of the plates in the first work are lightly reworked versions of subjects that originally appeared in Edwards and Darly's A New Book of Chinese Designs , published in 1754. The sources for the second work are less obvious but relate to images that appeared in the works of the Halfpennys, Charles Over and Thomas Wright Harris 192 & 193.
