London: Henry Colburn, 1839. 4 volumes (including the appendix to vol II). 8vo. xxviii, [iv], 597, [1]; xiv, [ii], 694, [2]; xiv, 615, [1] pp. Complete with 47 engraved plates and 9 folding maps by J. Gardner and J. and C. Walker (8 inserted in text, one loose in pocket at end of vol II). Without the half-title in vol I. Full navy morocco, spines gilt lettered. Plates and maps with some scattered foxing, folding maps with some repaired tears at folds. Provenance: Rev. John Allen Wedgwood (faint penciled ownership inscription to vol III). FIRST EDITION (FIRST ISSUE OF VOLUME III) OF DARWIN'S FIRST PRINTED WORK. Volume III comprises the 23-year old Darwin's journal of his voyage on the Beagle, probably the most famous voyage of modern science. Darwin's investigations, notably in the Galapagos, provided the genesis of his theory of evolution (Hill, p 394). Rev. Wedgdwood [1796-1882], grandson of the potter Josiah Wedgwood was rector of Maer Staffordshire. He officiated at the wedding of his cousins Charles Darwin and Emma Wedgwood.
