DANTE ALIGHIERI (1265-1321). La Commedia . Commentary by Christophoro Landino (1424-1498). Edited by Pietro da Figino (15th century). Venice: Bernardinus Benalius & Matteo Capasa, 3 March 1491. 2 o (298 x 206 mm). Collation : \Kp\k 1 0 ; a-z, &, \\j, \\i, A 8 B 6 C-I 8 K 6 L 8 . 302 leaves. 61 lines of commentary surrounding the text, and headlines. Types: 108R and 80R. Provenance : some occasional early marginalia, pen trials on i1r; John Gibbard, Sharnbrook House, Bedfordshire (armorial bookplate); Viscount Mersey, Bignor Park (bookplate); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1972. FIRST VENETIAN ILLUSTRATED EDITION, and the third illustrated edition. The illustrations closely follow those of the Ragazzo/Giunta Italian Bible which appeared less than five months earlier (Goff B-644). A full-page cut within architectural frame introduces each of the three parts, and numerous vignette cuts illustrate the three cantos. The cuts have been attributed to Hind's Venetian "popular designer," recently named the Master of Pico. Before the end of the year, the cuts were copied in the Dante printed by Petrus de Plasiis (Goff D-33) and were again used in Capcasa's 1493 (Goff D-34) and Zanni's 1507 (Sander 2319) editions. BMC V, 373 (var.); Essling 531; GW 7969 (Anm. 1); Goff D-32; H 5949; Sander 2313.
