Beschreibung:

Daniel Seghers (1590–1661), Simon de Vos (1603–1676)(?) Madonna in festoon of flowers. Flanders, 17th century. Oil on oak board, 73x51 cm. Madonna in a festoon of flowers represents innovative iconografical type, created around 1600 and later on becoming a favourite motif of 17th century Flemish painting. It is connected with counter-reformation movement as a reaction to the previous iconoclastic refusing of the Cult of Virgin Mary. One of the first representatives of new iconografical movement was Jan Brueghel who wrote to his friend Hendrick van Balen on 1 February 1608: “I started painting the flowers around the picture: according to the wish of His Eminence, who asked me to put Virgin Mary in the middle of landscape.” He asks his friend, if he was willing to paint Madonna for Francesco Borromeo, nephew of St.Karel Boromejsky, (Madonna in festoon of flowers, deposited in Milano, Ambrosiana). Not signed, at the back of the board parquetry, State A – after restoration. Daniel Seghers (1590–1660), Flemish baroque painter of flowers, born in December 3, 1590 in Antwerp. In 1611 he became a master of painters’ guild of St.Lucas in Antwerp. He studied at Jan Brueghel After joining the guild, he became deeply interested in catholicism (his mother was a calvinist) and in 1614 he decided to enter Jesuit monastery in Mechelen. The main topics of his paintings were religion and flowers, he mastered floral motifs and was highly recognized. We can trace the influence of his teacher Jan Brueghel He pictured the flowers in such a perfect way putting the religious theme in the shade. Simon de Vos (1603–1676)?, Flemish painter of historical scenes, portraits and genres. From 1615 he studied at Cornelis de Vos and in 1620 he became a member of painters’ guild of St.Lucas in Antwerp, where he was considered a rival of David Tenierse II. He is known for his cooperation with Seghers in case of “picture in picture” compositions. Lit.: Jarmila Vacková, Nizozemské malírství 15. a 16. století, Ceskoslovenské sbírky, Academia Praha 1989; Das flämische Stilleben 1550–1680, Luca Verlag, Wien 2002. Ausrufpreis: 230 000
