DescriptionProperty formerly from the Collection of the Bermuda National Trust
Daniel Mytens and StudioDelft circa 1590 - 1647/8 The HaguePortrait of William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke (1580–1630)
oil on canvas, reduced on the right-hand side, with an extension of 10cm. to the lower marginunframed: 238.8 x 147.5 cm.; 94 x 58 in.framed: 254.8 x 163.5 cm.; 100¼ x 64⅜ in.Condition reportThe canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is visible, superficial residue on the surface, probably caused by packing materials, and the paint surface itself appears to have sustained a degree of wear. There is a visible horizontal seam running through the centre of the canvas, with some associated retouching. Along the lower edge there is a dovetailed extension of approx. 10cm. from the lower margin, and some of the paint surface has started to lift along this join. There are a handful of minor knocks to the canvas, in the lower right corner and centre left. Visible retouching is evident in the landscape, centre right, and throughout the curtain. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an old, reflective layer of varnish, but reveals that there are at least two old campaigns of restoration found throughout the canvas. The most recent campaign of restoration is focused on the aforementioned seam and extension, as well as in the drapery, upper left, as well as to the left of the sitter's head; a much older campaign of restoration is also visible in the darks of the clothing, parts of his face, and the lower half of the composition, as well as in details of the landscape beyond. The painting is in overall fair condition.
