DANDRÉ-BARDON, Michel François Costume des anciens peuples, a l'usage des artistes , edited by C. Cochin, Paris: Alexandre Jombert the younger, 1784-86. 4 parts in 2 volumes, 4° (290 x 211mm.), text in double column, engraved frontispiece and 353 plates (text with occasional light spotting), contemporary French green morocco, triple fillets on sides, spines decorated and lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: George Gostling (bookplate); Frank Linsly James (bookplate). First published between 1772-74 in 31 parts. To make the work more easily available to the public, Dandré-Bardon reduced both the text and plates of the first edition "especially those which were not directly applicable to costume" (Blackmer). Contains illustrations of costumes, monuments and religious and military customs. cf. Blackmer 448; Brunet I, 654; cf. Cohen-de-Ricci 272; Colas 793; Lipperheide 107 (calls for 352 plates only). (2)
