DANCE OF DEATH. [ La grant danse macabree des hommes & des femmes hystoriee & augmentee de beaulx ditz en latin ]. Troyes: Nicolas Le Rouge, [1510?]. 2 o (265 x 183 mm). Collation (of fragment): b-c 4 e-f 4 g 2 h 4 k 2 . 24 (of 40) leaves (lacking 16 leaves). Printer's woodcut device at end, 41 (of 65) woodcuts (lacking 24 cuts). (Some soiling and staining, a little marginal fraying, a few minor wormholes.) Vellum portfolio; marbled slipcase. Provenance : Edmée Maus (bookplate, purchased from Gallanti in 1950); acquired from Librairie Paul Jammes, 1976. The second Troyes edition. The family of Le Rouge were the first printers at Troyes in 1483. Previously thought to have been printed in the 15th century, this rare edition of French Danse macabre is now believed to have been printed after 1500, when Nicolas began his career. The earliest edition of the French Danse macabre was published by Guy Marchant in Paris in 1485, and was illustrated using this wonderful series of cuts. An earlier Troyes edition by Guillaume Le Rouge was published in 1491, using the same cuts that had previously belonged to Marchant. "Nicolas Le Rouge printed several editions of the Danse macabre; his output helped to inaugurate a strong tradition of popular publishing of vernacular French literature which made Troyes one of the main centres for such books right down to the eve of the French Revolution. Much medieval lore was incorporated into the present collection, including, besides the processions of dancing figures, other poems and ballads in French on the theme of death" ( The Douce Legacy: An exhibition to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the bequest of Francis Douce , Oxford, 1984, item 155). At the end of this edition is a woodcut of the Printer adoring the Virgin and Child, which first appeared in Dupré's Horae of 4 February 1488/89, with the original shield altered here to contain Nicolas Le Rouge's initials. EXTREMELY RARE: only a few copies recorded (a copy in the Bibliothèque du Mans, and the Gaignat-MacCarthey-Douce copy in the Bodleian). Bechtel D-53; Deckert 267; Hain 10410; ISTC id00021400; Pr 8758.
