Dame Joan is admired for her elegant style and is seen by many as the epitome of glamour. Having grown up in London and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), she was later signed to Rank the British Film Studio at only seventeen years old. From this point her career flourished. Her British films at the start of her career include 'I Believe in You' with Celia Johnson, 'Decameron Nights' with Joan Fontaine and 'Our Girl Friday' with Kenneth More. A career in Hollywood soon beckoned and Dame Joan signed under contract to 20th Century Fox. Her early Hollywood films include 'The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing', 'Rally Round the Flag Boys the Virgin Queen', 'The Opposite Sex', 'Land of the Pharaohs' and 'The Big Sleep', working with some of Hollywood's greatest legends including, Richard Burton Bing Crosby, Bette Davis, Kirk Douglas, Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Kelly, Bob Hope, Shirley Maclaine, Robert Mitchum, Paul Newman, Debbie Reynolds and Gregory Peck. Dame Joan has also guest starred in some of the world's most popular TV series, including, Batman, Star Trek, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Starsky & Hutch, Mission Impossible, The Love Boat, Pacific Palisades, Roseanne, Will & Grace, Footballers Wives, Hotel Babylon, Benidorm, Miss Marple, The Royals, American Horror Story and Hawaii 5-0. However, it is Dame Joan's iconic portrayal of Alexis Carrington Colby in the hit television series, Dynasty, that is arguably her most celebrated role, winning her a Golden Globe in 1982. She is widely credited with making the show an international success. During the 1980s, an era of excess, viewers around the world tuned in weekly to witness the elaborate schemes and legendary showdowns that Alexis orchestrated while looking like a million dollars in every scene. The fashion alone was a big draw for viewers and Dame Joan had complete control of her character's glamorous wardrobe, collaborating with one of Hollywood's most iconic designers, Nolan Miller, and wearing designs by Valentino, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent Cardin and many others over its nine-year run. Dame Joan has performed on Broadway, the West End, and in national tours across the UK and North America. She has also starred opposite Steven Berkoff in the film adaptation of his play, 'Decadence' and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat' with Donny Osmond and the late Richard Attenborough. Since the release of her first autobiography in 1985, Dame Joan's novels and memoirs have sold over 50 million copies worldwide. She is a regular contributor to The Spectator, The Daily Mail, The Telegraph, The Times and Harper's Bazaar.
