DALRYMPLE, Alexander. A Collection of Charts and Memoirs . London, 1771-72.
DALRYMPLE, Alexander. A Collection of Charts and Memoirs . London, 1771-72. Text volume with nine parts in one, 4 o (258 x 202 mm) and atlas 2 o (503 x 642 mm). Text: General title, eight section titles; 10 engraved folding charts and coastal profiles (some spotting). Atlas: 8 engraved maps, two with overslips (including 2 additional maps by Edmund Halley & Lozier Bouvet, and Bartholemew Plaisted & John Ritchie not listed in the introduction and detailed below). Text bound in contemporary speckled calf (rebacked); atlas in contemporary half calf, marbled boards (spine and corners renewed). Provenance : Charles Pierrepont (bookplate in text volume); Peter Ducane, Jr. (bookplate in atlas volume). A VERY RARE ATLAS OF PACIFIC CHARTS. This work includes a number of Dalrymple's writings on the Pacific, all of which contributed significantly to knowledge about the area. Dalrymple was a pioneer in the attempt to establish a free port on Balambangan, as well as a proponent of the search for the Northwest Passage (thereby influencing Vancouver's survey). His research and theories about a great Southern Continent led to his appointment by the Royal Society as commander of the 1768 expedition, a decision which was later countermanded by the Admiralty who installed Captain Cook instead. Dalrymple himself led major explorations of the Pacific and his surveys and hydrographical study revolutionized chart-making. The introduction lists 6 sections in addition to the general introduction, while there are eight included here, each with separate title and pagination. The sections comprise "General Introduction to the Charts and Memoirs," "Essay on the Most Commodious Methods of Marine Surveying," "Memoir of a Chart of the China Sea," "Memoir of the Chart of Part of the Coast of China and the Adjacent Islands near the Entrance of Canton River," "Journal of the Schooner Cuddalore, Oct. 1759. on the Coast of China," "Journal of the Schoomer Cudallore on the Coast of Hainan 1760," "Memoir of the Chart of the West Coast of Palawan, or Paragua," "Memoir of a Chart of the Southern Ocean," and "Memoir of a Chart of the Bay of Bengal." The final two sections are not recorded. Copies have varying numbers of plates and this copy includes two additional maps in the atlas: 1. Edmund Halley and Lozier Bouvet. "A Chart of the Ocean between South America and Africa." London: Thomas Jefferys, April 1769. Halley and Bouvet outlined tracks in the South Pacific outline a possible Southern Continent, the potential presence of which greatly concerned Dalrymple. See Howard T. Fry, Alexander Dalrymple and the Expansion of British Trade , London, 1970, p.110. -- 2. Bartholemew Plaisted and John Ritchie "A Chart of the Northern Part of the Bay of Bengal." London: Alexander Dalrymple, 15 September 1772. With overslip. Adams & Waters 584; Cordier Sinica 133-4; Howgego D4. (2)
