Dale Chihuly (b. 1941) Organic Abstract Green Glass, 176cm high (69.5'') Provenance: The Jefferson Smurfit Group, Dublin Born in 1941 in Cacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly was introduced to glass when studying interior design at the University of Washington. After graduating in 1965, Chihuly enrolled in Harvey Littleton's seminal glass program at the University of Wisconsin and continued his glass studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he was awarded a MFA in 1968. After a Fulbright Fellowship, working and observing in the Venini factory in Venice, Chihuly returned to RISD to establish and head a glass department. In 1971 Chihuly co-founded Pilchuck Glass School, fifty miles north of Seattle. Chihuly has been the recipient of many awards including honorary doctorates from the University of Puget Sound, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the California College of Arts and Crafts. he is a Fellow of the American Craft Council and has received the Governor's Art Awards from both Rhode Island and Washington. He has also been honoured with two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Council for the Arts Visual Artist's Award and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. In 1992 he was named the first National Living Treasure in the United States and in 1986 he became the fourth American to be honoured by a one-man exhibition at the Louvre Museum in Paris. One of his most notable public installations can be seen in Union Station in Tacoma, Washington. In September of 1999 Chihuly unveiled an 18ft chandelier gracing the main entrance of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. His work is included in over one hundred and eighty museum collections from New York to Kyoto including the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Japan Institute of Arts and Crafts, Tokyo, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, Museum of Fine Art, Boston, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, National Museum, Stokholm, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan, National Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Seattle Art Museum, Taipei Museum of Fine Arts, The Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
