COUNTRY LIFE . London: Hudson and Kearns and George Newnes et al., 1897-1979 Volumes I-CLXVI, 4to. Numerous illustrations printed in monochrome and colour. (Some scattered light spotting or dampmarking, some volumes ex-library with unobtrusive bookplates and inkstamps, lacking a few issues, mainly 1960s-1970s.) Bound in contemporary half roan gilt [vols. I-II, XLV-LVI and LVIII-LXIV], contemporary cloth gilt [vols. III-XLIV, LVII, LXV-CXXXIX, CXL (part), CXLIII-CXLVI, CXLIX-CLI, and CLII (part)], and original wrappers [CXL (part), CXLI-CXLII, CXLVII-CXLVIII, and CLII-CLXVI] (Some volumes a little shaken, some rubbing to extremities, occasional light marking, minor splitting or tears on joints of a few volumes, boards on a few volumes detached). A RARE EXTENSIVE RUN OF COUNTRY LIFE , THE FOREMOST BRITISH JOURNAL FOR THE HISTORY OF FURNITURE, ARCHITECTURE AND GARDEN DESIGN. Founded in 1897, Country Life swiftly established itself as an important journal for students of the applied arts in Britain. Each issue contains well-illustrated articles written by leading specialists in the field, and the combination of pieces written by luminaries such as Henry Avray Tipping, Sir Lawrence Weaver, Christopher Hussey Ralph Edwards, Percy Macquoid Getrude Jekyll, Margaret Jourdain, and Mark Girouard, with photographs by Frederick Evans (described by Alfred Stieglitz as 'the greatest exponent of architectural photography'), Charles Latham and others, made it an authoritative reference for the country houses of Britain and their furnishings, including many that were demolished or destroyed in the course of the 20th century. The calibre of the contributions commissioned and published by Country Life can be gauged by the volumes by its writers published under the magazine's imprint, many of which have become established as authoritative texts in their fields, including Macquoid's A History of English Furniture ; Macquoid and Edwards' The Dictionary of English Furniture ; Edwards and Jourdain's Georgian Cabinet Makers ; Jourdain's English Interior Decoration 1500 to 1830 ; Jourdain's English Decoration and Furniture of the Later XVIIIth Century (1760-1820) ; Tipping's Grinling Gibbons and the Woodwork of his Age and English Homes ; and Weaver's Houses and Gardens by Sir Edwin Lutyens . The present sequence is complete from the first issue to December 1979 (with the exception of a few issues from the 1960s and 1970s); complete runs are of great rarity on the market (and indeed, in institutional collections--for example, the British Library's set lacks some 13 issues), and none of similar range can be traced at auction in American Book Prices Current since 1975. Sold as a periodical, not subject to return.
