Hand-coloured engraved headpiece, 96 hand-coloured engraved plates by Dupin, Martin, Voysard and others after Le Clerc, Martin and Desrais. (Title with 'Tome Second' and 'Du Roi' excised, lacking the 6 plates of 'Coiffures à la mode en 1780', a few plates with marginal tears, skilfully repaired, occasional light marginal soiling.) Contemporary calf (covers detached, worn), later red cloth slipcase. This work was published as a periodical, in 'cahiers' of six pages, by Esnauts and Rapilly between 1778 and 1788, and was intended to form four volumes. According to the title of the first volume, the delicate colouring was by Madame Le Beau. Although the complete list of plates given by Colas totals 436 engravings on 418 leaves, he states that "Il n'existe pas, à ma connaissance, d'exemplaire bien complet de toutes les planches". This volume comprises Cahiers 17 to 33, but lacks Cahier 29, suite 7 e , the coiffures, which was known to Colas only from the plates in James de Rothschild's copy. Colas describes the work as "le plus beau qui existe sur les modes du XVIII e siècle". Colas 1169; Lipperheide Fb40; Vinet 2244.
