Paris: Denys Janot, 1540. 8° (150 x 100mm). Architectural title-border and 100 woodcuts by Jean Cousin enclosed within ornamental borders, woodcut initials, ALL HAND-COLOURED . (Small crease to title and O2, occasional light soiling, small marginal repair to D4 and repair to E4 and K5, corner of O2 repaired.) 18th-century calf, spine gilt, marble edges (two corners bumped). Thompson Yates (booklabel). YATES THOMPSON COPY OF THE EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION, COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND . Only one copy of this edition is recorded on ABPC/AE online and this is the only hand-coloured copy to be offered for sale in recent years. The same cuts were used for four Janot editions: the present in 1540, in 1541 and two in 1543 with the borders, and without borders for a 1548 edition by Étienne Groulleau, who inherited Janot's stock. The majority of the blocks have single-line borders and figures sketched in the Italianate style introduced by Tory. Though Corrozet's name does not appear on the title, it heads the prefatory verses on A2v which note the use of the emblem book as a 'model book'. All early illustrated editions are scarce.
