Sam Francis (1923-1994) Untitled (SF 78-919) (1978) Stamped and with signature Sam Francis Estate on the reverse Acrylic on paper, 27.9 x 35.2 cm Provenance: - Gallery Delaive, Amsterdam - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: This work is recorded with the Sam Francis Estate under archive no. SF 78-919. Sam Francis was a leading figure in the Abstract Expressionist Movement who influenced subsequent generations of painters with his innovative approach to abstraction. Known for his vibrant, coloured abstractions that blend elements from Colour Field Painting, Impressionism, and Abstract Expressionism, Francis is noted as one of the first post-War II painters to develop an international reputation. In the early 1970s, Francis departed from the more minimalist trends of the mid to late 60s, where his work seemed to deviate from the vibrant colours and imaginative passion that defined his earlier career. Returning to a grandiose use of colour, he eloquently described colour as "light on fire". Francis’ work from the late 1970s and early 1980s is characterized by a fascination with snakelike forms and colourful drips, as can be seen in this work on offer. * Condition report available upon request
