CONRAD, JOSEPH. 'Twixt Land & Sea. Tales. London: Dent 1912. 8vo, original green cloth, spine a trifle faded, natural discoloration to free endpapers. FIRST EDITION, third issue binding with the word "Seven" on the front cover correctly stamped (the first issue is rare), PRESENTATION COPY, to Sir William Rothenstein and his wife, inscribed by Conrad on the front free endpaper: "To dear Will & Alice with love from J.C." Smith 17. "On July 28, 1903, Conrad wrote his first extant letter to...Rothenstein, the portraitist and painter...Rothenstein had evidently asked Conrad to sit for him, and the association began a warm friendship that lasted for the length of Conrad's life..."--Frederick R. Karl, Joseph Conrad , New York, 1979, p. 547. Rothenstein did a portrait of Conrad in 1903; at one point he raised money to help support the author. ' Twixt Land & Sea contains the first book appearance of "The Secret Sharer."
