CONRAD, Joseph (1857-1924). Lord Jim: A Tale . Edinburgh: Blackwood, 1906. 8°. Original green cloth (faded at spine, joints tender). With Ottoline Morrell's extensive pencil marks in the text and a long series of notes on rear endpapers, and her dates of reading on the front free endpaper, 'Lausanne Feb 1912 23-26. Garsington March 1918.' Fourth impression. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper, across Morrell's inked ownership monogram. CONRAD, Joseph. Almayer's Folly . London: Unwin, 1896. 8°. Original green cloth (faded at spine). Second edition. With Ottoline Morrell's ownership monogram on the front free endpaper and dates of reading: 'Lausanne. Feb 26. 1912. 16 Fitzroy Square April 17-18 1928'. With five other works by Conrad bearing Ottoline Morrell's signature or monogram. Despite Henry James's attempts to deter her, Ottoline Morrell visited Conrad at his home in the summer of 1913, writing on August 11 to Bertrand Russell: 'I told him that it was you who had given me his books and I described you a little and he said, "Oh, I like mathematicians" ... He was so easy to talk to' (Seymour, p.183). In her Memoirs she recalled: 'As I sat there I could hardly believe that I was really talking to the man whose work had haunted me for years, and about whom I had thought and wondered with such intensity. He made me feel so natural and very much myself, that I was almost afraid of losing the thrill and wonder of being there, although I was vibrating with intense excitement inside' ( Early Memoirs , p.241).
