CONFUCIUS. Confucius Sinarum philosophus, sive scientia sinensis latine exposita , edited by Philippe Couplet and others. Paris: 1687. 4 parts in one volume, 2° (320 x 215mm). Pagination: cxiv, cxvii-cxxiv, 108, 21, [3], 159, [1], xx, 108 [i.e., 110], 8pp. Folding engraved map, engraved portrait of Confucius. (Title and preliminaries slightly soiled and stained, K-Cc waterstained, occasional browning.) Contemporary calf gilt (rebacked preserving old spine, covers scuffed and wrinkled). Provenance : early marginalia in ink and later in pencil -- Neander Library, Rochester Theological Seminary (label). FIRST EUROPEAN EDITION OF CONFUCIUS with a dedication to Louis XIV, preceded only by fragmentary translations. In addition to the first three books of Confucius, the work includes his biography, valuable essays on Chinese history and culture, and much factual information. This issue is without the 1p.
